Chasing 275, India consolidate after bad start

Gautam Gambhir Mumbai, April 2 (IANS) Chasing a 275-run target, India recovered from a bad start to go into the first drinks break after 15 overs at 81 for two with Gautam Gambhir (40) and Virat Kohli (19) at the crease in the World Cup final against Sri Lanka here Saturday.

Gambhir hit a four of the last ball of the 15th over and brought up the 50-run stand between the two Delhi players.

Sri Lanka earlier were in full control after fast bowler Lasith Malinga brought an abrupt end to Sachin Tendulkar’s World Cup campaign by sending him back for just 18 runs with the score at 31 for two in 6.1 overs.

Tendulkar, who was still waiting for his 100th international century, edged a Malinga delivery to wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara to stun the capacity crowd into silence.

India lost Virender Sehwag in the first over.
