Bangalore, May 29 (IANS) Yashas Chandra of Mysore upstaged his more fancied opponents on the first day of Toyota IGU southern India Juniors at the KGA course here Tuesday when more than 100 enthusiastic junior golfers from across the nation vied for an early lead.

Yashas topped the leader board with a two-over par 74 in the Under-18 age category, while in the Under-14 section, Piyush Sangwan from DLF Golf and country Club emerged on top with one-over par 73.

Chandra, who showed a lot of promise last year by winning Chandigarh Junior Open and Ooty Gymkhana tournament, was two strokes behind leaders Shubankar Sharma (ITC Classic Golf Resort, New Delhi) and D Venkat Gautam (Boulder Hills Golf Resort, Hyderabad) at the end of nine holes. But on the back nine, Chandra played a stable game to snatch the lead.

Shubankar Sharma, the Toyota Etios Eastern India Junior tournament champion in 2011, blew away the lead with a triple bogey at the 18th hole to finish on 75 and in second position.

One of the favourites at the start of the tournament, Manu Gandas of DLF Golf and Country Club, Gurgaon, who has already notched up two wins this year, finished on six-over 78 and in 14th place. Meanwhile, Sangwan started off with a double-bogey on the first hole, but recovered quickly with a birdie on the fourth and finished the front nine with a one stroke lead.

Sangwan sustained the momentum to finish ahead of Tollygunge’s Viraj Madappa and Prakhar Asawa (Rambagh Golf Club), both 74.
