Panchkula, March 23 (IANS) In a thrilling encounter, Chandigarh Lions kept their nerves to edge past Chennai Superstars by four runs in the Indian Cricket League’s 20s Grand Championship here. In another, rain-affected match in Hyderabad, Kolkata Tigers defeated Ahmedabad Rockets by eight wickets with eight balls to spare and moved into the fourth place on the points table Saturday night.
Electing to bat, Lions put up 195 for eight wickets in 20 overs while Superstars finished at 191 for nine in 20 overs at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium near Chandigarh.
The stars for the Lions were captain Chris Cairns, who smashed 67 off only 32 balls, cracking five boundaries and as many sixes, and Kiwi Lou Vincent (42 off 22 balls, 8×4s). Pacer Love Ablish (3 for 19) was the pick of the bowlers for Superstars.
For the Superstars, Australian Ian Harvey, who scored a breezy 58 from 37 balls (6×4s, 3×6s), and Ganapathi Vignesh, who made 42 off 22 balls (5×4s, 3×6s), were the top scorers. Pacer Thirunavukkarasu Kumaran and left-arm spinner Jamaluddin Syed Mohammed took three wickets each for the Lions.
In Hyderabad, Rockets won the toss and posted 156 for six in 20 overs, with Sridharan Sriram scoring an unbeaten half-century (52 off 35 balls, 3×4s, 1×6) at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium.
However, rains during the interval saw Tigers’ target being revised to 86 runs from a maximum of 10 overs instead of 20. Former South Africa all-rounder Lance Klusener was the top scorer with an unbeaten 30 off 23 balls (3×4s) as Tigers easily accomplished the task in 8.4 overs losing just two wickets.
Lahore Badshahs continue to lead the eight-team Twenty20 tournament with eight points while Hyderabad Heroes are placed second with six. Both teams have played four matches each.
Chennai Superstars, Kolkata Tigers, Chandigarh Lions and Delhi Giants are tied at four points while Mumbai Champs and Ahmedabad Rockets are languishing with two points apiece.
