Central Board of Direct Taxes verifying CWG transactions

Manmohan Singh New Delhi, Aug 6 (ANI): In the wake of allegations of corruption in expenses incurred by the Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee, the Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes, SSN Moorthy, on Friday said the CBDT is verifying the Games transactions in a similar manner like the other investigating agencies.

Addressing a seminar here, Moorthy said: “Just as other agencies are also looking, we are also verifying by documents, the people and other factors.”

Earlier today, there was an uproar in the Lok Sabha after the Opposition launched a joint attack on the Government over the issue of alleged corruption and financial irregularities in the upcoming mega-event.

Raising the issue, BJP leaders, JD (U) chief Sharad Yadav, Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and RJD’s Lalu Prasad challenged the Government to clarify the whole controversy.

Calling it a Rs one lakh crore scam, Mulayam Singh Yadav said: “There are several areas of corruption within the Commonwealth Games.”

He further said Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh must clarify on the scam.

Sharad Yadav also slammed the Congress party for ignoring the events concerning the Commonwealth Games.

Defending the Government, Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam said, “The Commonwealth Games is the pride of the nation and any sort of corruption will not be tolerated by the government.”

He added that all these allegations would be probed.

Meanwhile, after strong protests over the issue, Speaker Meira Kumar adjourned the proceedings till 2 p.m. (ANI)
