Carly Gullickson And Travis Parrot: Winning Combination At US Open

mixCarly Gullickson teamed up with Travis Parrot for the 2009 US Open Mixed Doubles title. They made their way to the title by stunning the second seeded pair of Leander Paes and Cara Black. Gullickson seemed dazed in her post-match press conference when she said “I still can’t believe we actually won the US Open….It’s weird to me.”

Gullickson and Parrot came together for the first time. Spears was the first choice for Gullickson but that didn’t happen. Parrot is reported to have sent a text to Gullickson asking her to play with him and she agreed. It is a big thing for this duo of wild card entrants to defeat the favorites and the defending champions of the US Open.

Between them the duo shares five doubles title, two saved match points from the opening match against Nadia Petrova and Max Mirnyi. They didn’t drop any more set as they proceeded to draw the game. They knocked of three more seeds in the semifinals which included the number one seed Huber and Bhupati.

It was Gullickson who was seen calling the shots during the tournament. Her power-packed shots made her the most valuable player proving Parrot’s decision correct. The Paes-Black pair made as many as eight unforced error compared to the two errors made by Gullickson-Parrot.

Again it was the winning duo who served five aces whereas the second seed could only manage two.

The local wild cards not only made a great winning pair but achieved victory with conviction. It was no mean feat for the duo, who turned professionals in 2003, to wrap up the first set in just twenty seven minutes playing against such experienced ones like Paes and Black.
