‘Carjacked’ wife’s ordeal fails to avert Joe Cole’s driving ban
August 28th, 2010 - 2:51 pm ICT by ANILondon, Aug 28(ANI): In an attempt to escape a driving ban, England and Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole has revealed that his wife Carly had been left ’severely traumatized’ after being carjacked outside their townhouse in Chelsea.
The carjacking was revealed in Staines Magistrates’ Court, after Cole was banned from driving for speeding at 105 miles-per-hour on a dual carriageway in Surrey, The Sun reports.
Cole’s lawyer Nick Freeman described Carly’s ordeal, and said that she was forcibly removed from her black Audi A4 from outside the couple’s home two weeks ago.
“His wife was outside their house in London when she was carjacked by eight thugs who were on motorbikes. She was physically removed from the car,” Freeman said.
“The car was stolen and it has not yet been recovered. She is 26 and has been severely traumatized by this incident to the extent that she has not driven a car since,” he added.
Freeman argued that Cole should be allowed to keep driving because of Carly’s ordeal.
He said that Cole would have to ferry around his wife and five-month-old Ruby, as their fame made it “unfeasible” for her to use public transport.
However, magistrate John Neary was not convinced, and handed Cole a 50-day ban and fined him 750 pounds with 600 pounds costs.
Cole, who played in Thursday’s Europa League game between Liverpool and Trabzonspor in Turkey, was not at the hearing. (ANI)
