Capello backs female officials in football amidst sexism row
January 26th, 2011 - 5:11 pm ICT by ANILondon, Jan 26(ANI): England manager Fabio Capello has entered football’s sexism storm by declaring that he had never seen a bad woman official.
“I hear there is a sexism row, but I played a lot of games with a woman linesman in Italy,” the Sun quoted Capello, as saying.
“Every time she was focused and made the correct decisions. The women linesmen are good.”
“I do remember, though, I asked the referee where the woman washed and changed after the game,” he added.
Capello’s comment comes after Sky Sports sacked their football pundit Andy Gray for inappropriate comments about women.
Gray was broadcasting a Premier League match between Wolverhampton and Liverpool on Saturday when he and presenter Richard Keys made disparaging remarks about lineswoman Sian Massey.
Gray said: “What do women know about the offside rule?”
Gray was initially taken off the air and temporarily suspended for making the sexist remark. (ANI)
