33636ao1Ali Gerba scored for the second straight game as Canada edged past El Salvador by the margin of one goal in the CONCACAF Gold Cup on Tuesday.

The win placed Canada in a strong position in Group A of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Defender Manuel Salazar headed the ball out of the penalty area, but to his misery the ball landed on the feet of Canada’s Patrice Demier. Demier took a shot towards the goal, leaving Gerba to deflect the ball past El Salvador’s goal keeper, Miguel Montes. The goal that led Canada to victory took place during the 32nd minute of the match.

This was Gerba’s fifth goal in his last four appearances for Canada, but the goal did little to dim the enthusiasm of the crowd which predominantly were in the support of El Salvador. El Salvador will now have to play a crucial game against Jamaica on Friday, as they seek to advance to the quarter finals. On the other hand, Canada needs a tie in their next meeting with Costa Rica, in order to advance to the quarter finals of CONCACAF Gold Cup, 2009. Stephen Hart, the coach of Canada, said that the team would not be aiming for a tie against their opponent, Costa Rica. “I think it’s always dangerous to play for a tie,” said Hart, who has won the first four games since taking charge of the team in April.

Canada’s defense seemed to be unstoppable as they smothered El Salvador’s attackers throughout the final quarter of the game. “Canada definitely played well as they were able to hold,” said El Salvador’s coach Carlos de los Cobos.
