heismanxDec 12, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Heisman Trophy ceremony is associated with suspense and excitement and people involved with it for years know that very well. However, this year’s ceremony which took place on Saturday turned out to be a rather low key affair compared to the previous years in its 76 year history. Cam Newton was declared the winner of the coveted trophy at Times Square’s Best Buy Theater on Saturday night. However, there was simply no emotional or tear filled speech this year at the much awaited event.

Cam Newton was delighted when his name was announced as he smiled and bowed his head. As a matter of fact, he managed to get more than 82 percent of the votes. He was followed by Andrew Luck, the Stanford University quarterback and Oregon Ducks’ running back LaMichael James respectively. For Cam Newton came as a huge relief given the fact that he has gone through his share of troubles this season but he has not been deterred by them. A few months back the player’s name got mired in a NCAA investigation and this created a buzz in the sports circle. The voters proved that they did not get affected by the pay for play rumor.

When a reporter asked Cam Newton after winning the trophy if he would have to return the trophy in future for breaking any rules, the player calmly said “Two letters for you, my friend, ‘No.” Cam Newton embraced his mother before proceeding to accept the trophy. It was an emotional moment for his mother. His father decided not to attend the ceremony so that no controversy can erupt. The NCAA did not find him guilty of the allegation but he might be under scrutiny for some time.
