Calls for Warne’s return to Oz Ashes team ‘nonsensical’: Hussey
December 13th, 2010 - 6:34 pm ICT by ANILondon, Dec 13(ANI): Australian batsman Michael Hussey believes that leg-spin legend Shane Warne will not be coming out of retirement to be part of the Test team, and said that the idea is “nonsensical”.
Australian people and sports writers have tried to cajole Warne out of retirement to be the cricket team’s Ashes savior.
Speculation that Australia’s all-time leading wicket taker could return to Test cricket had intensified after England won the Adelaide Test by an innings-and-71-runs to go 1-0 up in the five-match series.
“Shane Warne is one of the greatest bowlers of all time. That’s backed by his 708 Test wickets, with only Muthiah Muralidaran ahead of him with 800, but calls for him to return to the Australian team are nonsensical,” The Telegraph quoted Hussey, as saying.
“I’m sure Warnie could still bedazzle the best batsmen in the world at his best, but it’s been nearly four years since he played at Test level. No one, not even the great Warnie, can expect to waltz into a Test match, particularly the heat of an Ashes battle, and last the five days.”
“For the direction of Australian cricket, it wouldn’t be a good message to send to spinners in this country,” he added.
Warne has not ruled out the idea of a return, and has stated that the calls for him to come back are “very flattering”. (ANI)
