Button wants to become first Brit to retain Formula One crown
March 30th, 2010 - 12:48 pm ICT by ANILondon, Mar 30 (ANI): Ace racer Jenson Button wants to enter the record books by becoming the first Briton to retain the Formula One crown.
Button knows that winning successive titles will be difficult, as only eight drivers have managed the feat so far.
But he could also become the first racer in 53 years to win the championships with two different teams since Juan Manuel Fangio, The Sun reports.
“It would be an incredible achievement to win back-to-back titles with two different teams. As a champion, you want to retain your title; only 30 per cent of drivers do it. But it’s never easy, especially fighting against these exceptional drivers,” Button said.
“You always think the title might be on but it’s a long season. We don’t come away from Australia thinking we can win the next race in Malaysia on Sunday and it will be easy. It’s not like that,” he added.
Button, who took over as F1 champion with Brawn GP last year, is third in the drivers’ standings following up a seventh place in Bahrain with his triumph in Albert Park.
Button is hopeful of challenging his rivals in this Sunday’s Malaysian race where he won in a rain-lashed, shortened Grand Prix last year.
“Some people will say the victory in Melbourne was lucky but you can’t be lucky that many times. We made the right call at the right time. Vettel had the quickest car but they weren’t able to make the most of it,” Button said. (ANI)
