Butt hopes amendment to ICC code of conduct would see cut in ban
February 7th, 2011 - 2:29 pm ICT by ANILahore, Feb 7(ANI): Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt hopes that a possible amendment to the International Cricket Council’s code of conduct could see a reduction in his ten-year ban from the sport.
The ICC’s anti-corruption tribunal imposed a ’sanction of ten years ineligibility’ on Butt, “five years of which are suspended on condition that he commits no further breach of the code and that he participates under the auspices of the Pakistan Cricket Board in a programme of Anti-Corruption education.”
According to reports, the jurists felt that the evidence proved only that the infractions fell short of match fixing and ought to be distinguished from it.
“The judge has said there is a need to amend the law which is a good thing,” the Age quoted Butt, as saying.
“As soon as [the ICC code of conduct] is amended [my suspension] could be reduced. And we can go to court of arbitration, so there is still hope,” he added.
Under the ICC code, the banned players have 21 days to appeal to the International Court of Arbitration in Sports (CAS).
Declining to offer any further comment on the issue, Butt said he would hold a detailed press conference in two to three days. (ANI)
