Wellington, Apr 8 (ANI): Former Australian cricket coach John Buchanan is likely to become New Zealand Cricket’s new all-powerful director of cricket.

Buchanan confirmed to The Dominion Post that he was in Christchurch “after the earthquake” to discuss the position with NZC chief executive Justin Vaughan.

However, Buchanan would not be drawn on whether he was simply helping NZC structure the position, or in fact drawing up his own job description.

The role of director of cricket is arguably the most powerful in the game, with even Black Caps coach John Wright answerable to the successful applicant.

“I was definitely over there and had a meeting with New Zealand Cricket but we were just talking generally about coaching and high performance and a whole range of things, which is what I do,” Buchanan said.

Since stepping down as Australian coach (1999-2007) following among other achievements two World Cup titles, Buchanan has positioned himself as a cricket consultant.

He has worked with the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League and more recently England hired him as a consultant.

Buchanan admitted the director of cricket position was discussed with Vaughan.

“We had some discussions about that. I’ve had a few opportunities to meet Justin Vaughan over a number of years now, talking about a range of things, and that was one of the things that came up. What it could be and what it should be, so I gave my thoughts and views,” he said. (ANI)
