Wellingron, Apr. 17 (ANI): New Zealand Cricket Director John Buchanan has expressed confidence about delivering success for the Black Caps sooner than later, and added that he is sure that he can have a positive working relationship with Coach John Wright.

“I’m very confident John (Wright) and I can work well together but we’ve only had a very brief chat. There’s still a lot of discussion between he and I, how both roles fit together. In my mind, I think it will work exceptionally well,” stuff.co.nz quoted Buchanan, as saying.Buchanan said he wouldn’t go on tour when New Zealand face Australia in November, leaving Wright in charge and free to build on his good work at the World Cup.

The 58-year-old Queenslander’s wide-ranging brief is to establish clear and consistent national coaching philosophies and a talent identification program. As Australian cricket team coach, Buchanan won two World Cups and set world records for most consecutive test wins (16) and ODI wins (21) in his eight-year tenure.

“We want NZC to be a template for high performance sport, not only cricket but other sports around the world would come to New Zealand to look at what we’re doing. A timeframe? Maybe six to eight years, it would be lovely if it’s earlier than that. That’s where we’re heading. To get there it’s about developing a leadership culture, meaning former leaders walking the talk,” said Buchanan.Buchanan’s first order of business is to talk to as many players and support staff as possible. He said some of the New Zealand team’s recent performances hadn’t endeared them to the public but he saw some healthy potential.

Buchanan’s favourite quote is a Henry Kissinger line: “Take people where they have never been before”. He saw his role as no different in sport or business. “If the job was going to be easy I wouldn’t have accepted it. I took it on, because I believe I can make a difference.” (ANI)
