July 19th, 2009 - 6:41 pm ICT by GD Tell a Friend -

tom18The third day of the British Open championship which is being held at the lush green field of Turnberry, belonged to the golfer Tom Watson, as the golfer stood tall at the top of the leader board. Watson, if he can hang on to eighteen more holes will have his name drafted in the “history books” of British Open Championship.

The oldest player to have won a major was 48 year old, Julius Boros, at the PGA championship in the year 1969. Watson, the 59 year old golfer needs to go through another 18 holes to get his name crafted as the oldest player to have won a major title in golf.

Earlier in the day, Watson had a mixed round as the golfer had 4 bogies and made 3 birdies. But it didn’t matter as the viewers were able to witness Watson nailing a 30 foot putt for a birdie at the 16th hole, which was co incidentally the same hole where Watson nailed a 70 foot putt yesterday. Watson made sure of grabbing the top spot at the leader board while he was at the 17th hole. The golfer chipped in with a birdie at the 17th hole, thus gaining a top spot.

Although on top, the golfer still has two face stiff challenges on the behalf of Mathey Goggin and Ross Fisher, both of whom stand one shot behind Watson at 3 under par. Lee Westwood and Retief Goosen are also right up there at 2 under par with Jim Furyk and Stewart Cink at 1 under.

The tournament has been split wide open as any one out of the 26 golfers can take the lead.
