British kick boxer Mark Fowler dies in Sydney
August 17th, 2011 - 8:11 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattSydney, Aug 17 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A 35-year-old British kick boxer died during a fight in the Australian capital Sydney. Mark Fowler was defending his World Boxing Council (WBC) Muay Thai Lightweight for New South Wales last Saturday when he collapsed in front of the fans and died later. His death has exposed the risk associated with the sport and got many people to call on the authorities to change the regulations.
The New South Wales Minister of Sports, Graham Annesley, told reporters that he has already asked for reforms to be made to ensure that safety is improved. He said that, “I have also instructed the Office of Communities to implement any additional precautions considered necessary to ensure all similar upcoming events fully comply with current legislation and safety requirements.”
Mark collapsed in the fifth round of the fight. He won his title in March. The British has been living in Australia for most part of his life. Officials say the death of Mark will be investigated by the Coroner’s office.
Tributes have been pouring in from all over the world including lovers of the sport which is considered one of the most dangerous in the world. The Muay Thai organization has also paid tribute to Mark describing him as one of the brightest stars of the sport.
