Brit boxing body may hold back million pound pay out to faking Audley Harrison
November 15th, 2010 - 3:21 pm ICT by ANILondon, Nov. 15 (ANI): Audley Harrison may have his million pound purse withheld by boxing chiefs after his joke world title fight with David Haye.
Harrison landed just one punch during the fight, and fans compared him to the Wizard of Oz’s cowardly lion.
British Boxing Board of Control secretary Robert Smith told The Sun: “It is a very difficult course to take to stop someone getting paid when they have just frozen.
“But rescinding some or all of Audley Harrison’s purse is something which we will have to consider,” he added.
He said: “You have to bear in mind it was such a let down for the 22,000 at the MEN Arena and the thousands watching at home.”
Harrison was blasted out inside three rounds by WBA world heavyweight champion Haye at Manchester’s MEN Arena.
Promoter Frank Maloney said: “Harrison should be locked up for impersonating a fighter.
Boxing chief Smith added: “The Board have rescinded purses on many occasions when we feel a fighter has not tried. Harrison just froze. He did nothing all night. It was a let down for the fans and the TV audience.”
Haye, who should make around five million pounds, will now try to unify the world titles by fighting Klitschko brothers Vitali and Wladimir before - he claims - he retires next October. (ANI)
