Brazilian footballer Barretto arrested with unaccounted cashMarch 20th, 2008 - 9:43 pm ICT by admin
Kolkata, March 20 (IANS) Indian football club Mohun Bagan’s star Brazilian striker Jose Ramirez Barreto was Thursday arrested from the city airport for travelling with $20,500 without proper documents. He was released on interim bail by a court. Barreto was detained by customs at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) airport here Thursday morning as he was about to leave the city for Port Louis, Mauritius with $20,500 without any supporting documents required for carrying so much foreign currency.
Barreto was later granted bail on a security of Rs.10,000.
His passport has been seized by the customs and he will not be allowed to leave India before the matter is settled. He is also required to visit the investigating officer of the customs once a week.
The district court has fixed April 3 as the next date for the final bail hearing.
“Barreto was travelling with three members of his family to Mauritius and he was carrying all the money as he preferred not to give it to his daughter. That caused the problem. Had all four carried $5,000 with them, there would not have been any problem,” Mohun Bagan general secretary Anjan Mitra told IANS.
Barreto is the most celebrated soccer star for Mohun Bagan, one of the country’s leading football clubs. He and Bhaichung Bhutia form the dream strike force for the team.
