Brasilia, July 25 (IANS) The Brazilian athletes are targeting at least 20 medals at the London Olympic Games, according to Brazil’s sports minister Aldo Rebelo.

Rebelo proved more optimistic than his colleagues at the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), who predicted the nation could win 15 medals, a number the minister considered to be on the conservative side, reports Xinhua.

“I think the COB’s prediction is compatible with our performance in Beijing,” said Rebelo, referring to Brazil winning 15 medals at the 2008 Games.

“With the government investment in high-performance sports and infrastructure, we are in a position to dream of bringing back a total of 20 medals, he added.”

According to Rebelo, the fields with the most medal winning potential for Brazil include judo, swimming and beach volleyball. Judo is expected to produce four or five medals. A gold medal is also expected in football.

“In men’s football, I think we have a great opportunity to win a gold medal for the first time in the 60 years of the Olympic Games,” said Rebelo. “Besides, our women’s football team always brings back a medal.”

Brazil’s performance at the Games is under spotlight since the country will be hosting the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro.
