Boucher wary of players burn out issuesMay 1st, 2008 - 6:51 pm ICT by admin
New Delhi, May 1 (IANS) The international cricket schedule is becoming cramped day by day with the emergence of new cricket leagues and South African wicket-keeper Mark Boucher wants the International Cricket Council (ICC) to sort out the calendar to give enough rest to the players. The 31-year-old, currently in the country to play for Bangalore Royal Challengers in the Indian Premier League (IPL), said the world body should sit down with the players association to sort out the calendar and incorporate the lucrative leagues so that adequate rest can be given to the players.
“I have seen quite a few ICC officials around here and spoken to them and they are also aware of it. The IPL has been a hit and they should sit down with the players association and fix a schedule to get it in and understand the problems of burn out issues,” said Boucher during a media interaction at the team hotel here Thursday after his side went down to Delhi Daredevils in the IPL.
The wicket-keeper also added that playing Twenty20 is easier than playing back-to-back one-day matches.
“We have no problems in playing lot of Twenty20 in a short span of time because it gets over quickly. But the problem lies in playing back-to-back one-dayers,” he said.
Boucher went on to add that the IPL has become popular not only in India but also in South Africa.
“Twenty20 was a big hit in South Africa after the World Championship and IPL has just acted as a catalyst. The IPL is a great concept and will be a great success all over the world,” he said.
On his team Royal Challengers dismal performance, Boucher said: “In Twenty20 you should be one step ahead. And in the last few matches, we have been one step behind.”
The South African, however, hoped that lady luck would soon smile and his team, currently lying at the bottom of the league, will make a turnaround.
