London, Dec 18 (DPA) British football club Blackburn Rovers has appointed Sam Allardyce as the new manager. The former Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United manager succeeds Paul Ince, who was sacked Tuesday. The club said in a statement Wednesday: “Blackburn Rovers are delighted to announce the appointment of Sam Allardyce as manager with immediate effect. Sam has signed a three-year contract.”

Blackburn chairman John Williams had made clear he thought appointing a manager before Saturday’s Premier League game at home to Stoke City was vital.

“You can’t underestimate how much of a boost a physical presence could have on Saturday for what is an absolutely mammoth game,” he said.

“Everyone needs to know how big this game is as this is a time the club really has to come together.”

Rovers lie second bottom in the Premier League.
