Bindra to go to China to promote cricket
August 1st, 2009 - 11:30 pm ICT by IANSMohali (Punjab), Aug 1 (IANS) The International Cricket Council’s principal advisor I.S. Bindra will go to China next week to explore the possibilities of cricket there and to promote the sport.
“I am leaving for China on Monday to see the infrastructure of cricket available there. During my trip, I would talk to the officials concerned and promote the game. We would try to build cricket from the grassroots level in China,” Bindra said here Saturday.
“In the past, China had shown keen interest in building their own cricket team and to participate in various tournaments. We would provide every possible help to them in this direction,” he added.
Bindra, who is the also the president of the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), was here for the association’s executive committee at the PCA stadium here, some 10 km from Chandigarh.
The executive committee also approved the appointment of Bhupinder Singh (senior) as the Punjab team’s coach for the 2009-2010 season.
It was also disclosed during the meeting that the Indian Premier League (IPL) grounds committee had declared the PCA cricket ground as the second best ground in India in the 2007-2008 season.
“The members of association have appreciated the efforts of the PCA management for our past achievements. We were adjudged second best by the IPL grounds committee,” said PCA spokesman Sushil Kapoor.
PCA has got an one-day international match between India and Australia November 2 this year.
“PCA is also likely to get the most coveted award of best cricket association of the country based on its overall performance as per the criteria fixed by BCCI,” Kapoor added.
