Big Merv’s boxing tip helping NSW pacer Bollinger to shape up

Sydney, Apr.19 (ANI): New South Wales fast bowler Doug Bollinger credits his current level of fitness to Australian team selector Merv Hughes.

Hughes is believed to have told Bollinger that he could get into shape with a couple of sessions of boxing and fitness workouts in the gym. Bollinger, who answered Hughes’s request, has duly now earned a call up to the Australian one-day team that is to take on Pakistan in a series in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Bollinger left on Friday for Dubai, where he took the place of Brett Lee, who is yet to fully regain fitness after surgery on his ankle.

“I just got told about the boxing classes by a few blokes in the squad, and thought it was a good thing for me to do,” Bollinger said.

“I’ve been to four or five sessions now, and I think it’s really been a benefit to me. It’s a good type of training. It gives me a bit more strength up top, and anything that helps you get stronger can only be good as a fast bowler,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Bollinger, as saying.

Bollinger laughed at the irony of Hughes’s advice, but took it as a signal that he needed to do some serious hard work.

“It is a bit of a funny one, but Merv is a selector, and what he says goes. He wanted me to get in better shape, and I’m more than happy to take his advice if it will make me a better cricketer. I’m also doing it for myself, just to feel better and be healthier. I hope to be at the same level of condition as the guys over there, and even if I don’t get to play, I’m going to make sure I keep training at my best,” he said.

“My aim was just to get into it and work as hard as I could to get in the best shape I can, and whatever happens, happens. If the fitness trainer wants me to get on the scales, I will. But for me it’s all about just wanting to be fit and be at my best,” he added. (ANI)
