New York, Jan 30, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Kenyan born athlete Bernard Lagat made history at the 103rd Millrose Games by registering his eighth Wanamaker Mile triumph on Friday. With the win, the American athlete created a new record of holding the maximum number of victories as he surpassed Irish athlete Eamonn Coghlan’s record of seven triumphs.
The three time Olympian crossed the finishing line at the Madison Square Garden within a time span of three minutes 56.34 sec and headed in the 11th lap of the race with much elan to emerge as the ultimate winner. As the champion athlete passed the finishing line he was greeted with a standing ovation and received cheers from the large number of crowd that had gathered at the venue to witness history being created on the tracks. At the same time, Bernard Lagat was also seen basking in the glory of his stunning achievement as he looked visibly delighted and acknowledged his fans by blowing kisses while crossing the finishing line.
In order to emerge victorious, the two time gold medalist at the 2007 outdoor World Championships had to beat Kenyan athlete Asbel Kiprop, who grabbed the second slot by finishing at 3 minutes 58.03 secs. The third position was registered by Britain’s Andrew Baddeley, who crossed the finishing line at 3 minutes 58.09 secs. While reacting to his amazing feat, the champion athlete exclaimed that when he had won the race for the first time in 2001, he did not think that he would be able to achieve this stupendous record. Moreover, Bernard Lagat also implied that the victory surely indicated that he would have to showcase the same performance even in the ninth time.
