Belgian sets record with 365 marathons in a year
February 7th, 2011 - 3:41 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Feb 7 (IANS) A Belgian runner has established a new world record by participating in 365 marathon races within a year.Stefaan Engels, dubbed “Marathon Man”, began his challenge in Belgium a year ago and has since run a marathon every day across seven countries, a BBC report stated Sunday.
Forty nine-year-old Engels crossed the finish line in Barcelona, the Spanish city, after running 15,000 km (9,569 miles) in a year.
“I don’t regard my marathon year as torture. It is more like a regular job,” Engels said.
Having averaged about four hours to complete a marathon, Engels said that his best time was 2 hours and 56 minutes.
Engels suffered from asthma, as a child, and had been told by doctors to avoid sport!
