London, December 3 (ANI): David Beckham was reportedly heartbroken after learning about the death of his beloved grandfather, Joseph West, who died from cancer.

The ace footie, whose second middle name is Joseph, was said to have received a call from teary eyed wife Victoria who informed him of the 83-year-old’s passing away at home.

The 34-year-old was “inconsolable” that he could not join family at his bedside due to the World Cup finals draw in South Africa, according to sources.

“He was exceptionally close to Joseph and is heartbroken he wasn’t there at the end. He made his grandad the proudest man on earth,” the Sun quoted a family friend as saying.

The friend added: “David wanted to say his final goodbyes but it couldn’t happen.

“Joseph would never have let his illness interrupt David’s football. He put up a hell of a fight. The doctors didn’t know what kept him going for the last days. The answer is his family.”

The pal further said: “Joe introduced David to his love affair with the sport.”

The friend went on: “Family comes before everything for David and that’s why this news has come as such a hammer blow.” (ANI)
