BCCI ratifies charges against Lalit Modi (Lead)
July 3rd, 2010 - 7:15 pm ICT by IANSMumbai, July 3 (IANS) The noose tightened around Lalit Modi as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ratified the charges against the suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman at its Special General Meeting here Saturday.
The board is also likely to file a criminal case against Modi, who was charged on several counts ranging from financial irregularities to bid-rigging as chairman of the cash-rich IPL, for embezzlement of Rs.1,200-Rs.1,500 crore.
The BCCI disciplinary committee, which will look into the charges slapped on Modi, was reconstituted with Jyotiraditya Scindia replacing BCCI president Shashank Manohar in the three-member panel.
Scindia is president of the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association. The other members of the disciplinary panel are Arun Jaitley and new IPL chairman Chirayu Amin.
Manohar pulled himself out of proceedings after Modi levelled countercharges against him and BCCI secretary N. Srinivasan and asked them to recuse themselves from hearing charges against him. Manohar will, however, continue to look into the filing of criminal cases against Modi.
“There was no opposition from any of the members against the ratification of charges against Modi,” a BCCI source said after the SGM.
The SGM was convened after Srinivasan rejected the replies of Modi contained in the three showcause notices and referred the charges to the disciplinary committee of the BCCI for further proceedings.
