Wellington (New Zealand), Sept.30 (ANI): The tour of Bangladesh, which begins on Friday, could be a chance for rookies in the national cricket squad to push their claims for World Cup spots, a refreshed skipper Daniel Vettori said.
Vettori, who stayed home while Ross Taylor led the team to Sri Lanka last month, said his first such break (for family reasons) from the game in 13 or 14 years, had reignited his passion to get away and do well for the team.
Brendon McCullum also took a break from the game at the same time and Vettori said he knew his fellow senior was also excited about returning to action.
The tour consists of two warm-up games on Friday and Sunday followed by five one-day internationals against Bangladesh.
The first ODI is on October 5 with the others following in quick succession on October 8, 11, 14 and 17, the New Zealand Press Association reports.
Vettori told Radio Sport the tour of Bangladesh was a chance to start getting players confident about their games and into a winning mindset and with next year’s World Cup in mind, the younger players were expected to get up to speed pretty quickly.
He made a special reference to youngsters Shanan Stewart, Kane Williamson, BJ Watling and Hamish Bennett. (ANI)
