‘Baby Schumi’ keeps alive German legacy in Formula One
October 30th, 2011 - 11:32 pm ICT by IANSGreater Noida, Oct 30 (IANS) Formula One’s youngest double World Champion Sebastial Vettel, who has been dubbed “Baby Schumi”, Sunday kept alive the rich German legacy of motorsports after the reign of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.
Vettel had already bagged the honours of youngest pole winner, youngest race winner, youngest champion and this year became the sport’s youngest double World Champion. Formule One supremo Bernie Ecclestone calls him “the most talented young driver in Formula One”.
On Sunday at the Buddh International Circuit, the German again went down in record books - as the first to win the inaugural Indian Grand Prix.
Vettell, a Red Bull young driver’s programme graduate, was leading the 2007 World Series for Renault when he received his maiden call-up from BMW Sauber to become their permanent test driver. He proved his mettle to suggest that he had the right attributes and got an unexpected call when Robert Kubica injured himself in a crash in Canada and could not take part in the US Grand Prix. Vettel finished eighth, picking up a world championship point at age of 19 years and 349 days.
Vettel was released the next season by BMW Sauber to drive for Toro Rosso, for whom he famously won the 2008 Italian Grand Prix on a rainy Sunday at Monza at the age of 21 years and 74 days, that earned him a move to the main Red Bull team for 2009. He replaced the ageing David Coulthard in Red Bull team for the 2009 season and became the youngest driver to finish runners-up in the World Championship.
Since then he never looked back and has been a dominant force in Formula One after winning the 2010 and 2011 World titles.
