Aussies tried to cheat Cook out of his ton
January 5th, 2011 - 1:52 pm ICT by ANISydney, Jan.5 (ANI): England opener Alastair Cook racked up another Ashes century on the third day of the final Test, despite the best efforts of Australia to cheat him out of it when he was on 99.
Phillip Hughes, at short leg, tried to claim the ‘catch’, with captain Michael Clarke leading the vociferous Australian appeals, but umpire Billy Bowden reviewed it, and replays clearly showed the ball bouncing before Hughes scooped it up, the Sydney Morning Heral reports.
Ian Botham had one word for it in the commentary box - “cheating”.
The bowler was once again the unlucky spinner Michael Beer, who thought he had Cook out on 46 on the second day, caught at mid-on, only for the batsman to be reprieved when replays showed he had bowled a no-ball.
The second close call for Cook left debutant Beer still waiting for his first Test wicket, but that soon arrived when the out-of-form Paul Collingwood, on 13, hoisted a catch to mid-on.(ANI)
