Aussies surrender before Murali Kartik

Opting to bat first after winning the toss this afternoon, the visiting team had a bad start when left arm pacer Zahir Khan got rid of makeshift opener Michael Clarke on the very first delivery of the innings.

Other opener Adam Gilchrist and skipper Ricky Ponting did give stability to their innings after the first-ball jolt with a 60-run partnership for the second wicket. But after the fall of the swashbuckling wicketkeeper-opener in the 10th over, the World Champions never looked in a position to post a good target.

None of the Australian batsmen appeared to have any idea of how to play left arm spinner Kartik, who ended up with his career best bowling figure of six for 27 in 10 overs.

RP Singh scalped two wickets, while Zaheer and Irfan Pathan took one each to bundle out the visitors in 41.3 overs. India now needs 194 runs for a consolation victory. (ANI)
