Auburn QB Cam Newton named Heisman Trophy Award winner

NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) — Auburn Quarterback Cam Newton was named the 2010 Heisman Trophy Award winner on Saturday.

Newton, 21, of College Park, Georgia, became the 76th winner of NCAA football’s most prestigious individual award, receiving 729 votes to defeat Andrew Luck of Stanford, who finished second with 78 votes, followed by LaMichael James of Oregon and Kellen Moore of Boise State.

“Honestly, it’s a dream come true for me, something every child has a dream that plays the sport of football, and I’m living testimony that anything is possible,” Newton said.

Standing at 6 foot 6 inches tall and weighing 250 pounds, Newton led the SEC in rushing with 1,409 yards, scoring 21 touchdowns and was the nation’s top-rated passer with 2,589 yards passing and 28 passing touchdowns.

His consistent performances all season have taken the top-ranked Auburn Tigers to the BCS national championship game against number two-ranked Oregon.
