Athletics track at London Olympic Stadium complete
October 4th, 2011 - 4:57 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Oct 4 (IANS) The athletics track at the 2012 London Olympic Stadium has been completed.
The track in the Olympic Stadium was unveiled Monday, Xinhua reported.
World record holder and Paralympic gold medallist Dan Greaves, British long jump record holder Chris Tomlinson and World Championships silver medallist Hannah England were the first athletes to take to the track.
They were joined by local school kids who will benefit from the Stadium’s legacy plans to be a venue for athletics, community and cultural events.
The track is about 13.5mm in depth, making it one of the fastest surfaces. It will be covered again to protect it while overlay installations continue at the stadium.
An 80m sprint straight identical to the full competition track has also been laid under one of the main stands, as well as an identical 400m warm-up track which is the other side of the greenway and will be linked to the stadium via a new temporary bridge.
London Olympics Organising Committee chairman Sebastian Coe said: “Today marks a huge milestone for the project, as the Olympic Stadium starts to come to life and people get a glimpse of how it will look in less then ten months time when we welcome the world’s athletes. Although there is still a lot of work to do on the stadium, seeing some of our top British athletes on the track with local school children really underlines the stadium’s potential for 2012 and beyond.”
The 2012 Olympic Games are scheduled from July 27 to Aug 12.
