Asian Games TT: Sharath, Amalraj in singles pre-quarters

Guangzhou, Nov 17 (IANS) India’s Sharath Kamal and Amalraj Anthony advanced to the men’s singles pre-quarterfinals of the table tennis competition at the Asian Games here Wednesday.

Sharath thrashed Sri Lankan Rohan Nanamendra 11-9, 11-7, 11-1, 11-8 in a late evening first round match at the Guangzhou Gymnasium. He now plays world no. 116 Sang Eun Oh South Korea in the round of 16.
Amalraj, ranked 168, had to toil against world no. 656 Muhammad Shakirin Ibrahim of Malaysia for a 11-4, 7-11, 11-8, 13-11, 8-11, 11-8 victory. He faces Chih Yuan of Chinese Taipei in the next round.

Earlier, India’s challenge in the women’s doubles ended in the opening round.

Madhurika Patikar and Shamini Kumaresan sprung a surprise by stretching the formidable Chinese Taipei pair of Yi Hua Huang and Ching Cheng to five sets. But the the Indians could not find the range after the third game and lost 11-5, 3-11, 12-10, 4-11, 4-11.

Mouma Das and Mamata Prabhu were blanked by the Singaporean pair of Jiawei Li and Beibei Sun 5-11, 5-11, 2-11.

Shamini is scheduled to play her singles match against Japanese Sayaka Hirana while Sharath and Subhajt Saha will play their doubles pre-quarterfinal against Sang Eun Oh and Jungwoo Lee of South Korea Thursday.
