Ashley Cole arrestedMarch 6th, 2009 - 4:07 pm ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
The English player and the Chelsea defender Ashley Cole was arrested and fined in the early hours Thursday after drunkenly insulting police outside a west London nightclub.
Cole, the 28-year-old was leaving the Collection nightclub in South Kensington, about 2 kilometers from Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium, when he swore at police.
Cole refused to stop cursing and was held in a police cell for more than three hours until he sobered up and was fined 80 pounds, the standard penalty for the offense.
‘I felt I was being harassed by paparazzi and, while complaining to the police about this at the scene, they did warn me to calm down - a warning that I regrettably did not heed,’ Cole said in a statement. ‘I fully appreciate that whatever frustrations I may have had with others that it was completely inappropriate to vent those in conversations with the police.
‘However, I do want to make clear that I swore in frustration at the paparazzi behavior. I would never disrespect police officers in anyway.’ Cole, who is married to Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole, is widely reported to be paid more than 80,000 pounds per week.
‘I take very seriously my responsibilities as a professional footballer,’ Cole said. ‘This includes keeping my body in the best condition. Although I had consumed some alcohol earlier in the evening on a night out with friends, it had not been excessive.
