Arthur backs Ponting to bat at No.3
April 2nd, 2011 - 1:34 pm ICT by ANISydney, Apr 2 (ANI): Former South African cricket coach Mickey Arthur has said that Ricky Ponting should remain bat at No. 3 in Australia’s batting order, despite giving up captaincy.
Arthur believes it is vital that veterans like Ponting and Mike Hussey are retained under new skipper Michael Clarke when the Australian Test squad next reassembles for the back-to-back tours to Sri Lanka and South Africa.
“I’m of the opinion he [Ponting] should stay at No. 3,” Arthur told the ESPN Cricinfo website.
“I think he’s still the best in that position. We saw that in the World Cup game [against India], but it will be interesting to see where he ends up. If I was coaching, I’d want him there,” he said.
Ponting and Hussey are both in the Australian squad to tour Bangladesh in April for three one-day internationals, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
Arthur, who coaches Western Australia, said their experience would be crucial later in the year as Clarke steered the team through the tours of Sri Lanka and South Africa for Tests and ODIs. (ANI)
