Arnab, Clifford ruled out from AFC Challenge Cup

Bayern Munich New Delhi, March 2 (IANS) Injuries have ruled out promising defender Arnab Mondal and seasoned medio Clifford Miranda from India’s 23-member football squad for the AFC Challenge Cup, starting March 8 in Kathmandu.

India’s chief football coach Savio Medeira dropped goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and mid-fielder Lester Fernandes on the basis of their form.

Savio did not name a captain but forward Sunil Chettri has been included after missing the Bayern Munich tie in January due to an ankle injury.

India have been grouped with World Cuppers North Korea, the Phillippines and Tajikistan. India start their campaign against Tajikistan, March 9.

The Squad:
Goalkeepers: Karanjit Singh (Salgaocar), Subhasish Roychowdhury (Dempo SC), Arindam Bhattacharya (Churchill Brothers).

Defenders: Nirmal Chhetri, Raju Gaikwad (both Kingfisher East Bengal), Sameer Naik (Dempo SC), Gourmangi Singh (Churchill Brothers), Anwar Ali, Kinsukh Debnath, Syed Rahim Nabi (all McDowell Mohun Bagan), Gurjinder Singh (Pune FC).

Midfielders: Adil Khan (Sporting Clube de Goa), Anthony Pereira (Dempo SC), Reisangmi Vashum (Kingfisher East Bengal), Rocus Lamare, Francis Fernandes (both Salgaocar SC), Jewel Raja (McDowell Mohun Bagan), Lenny Rodrigues, Lalrindika Ralte (both Churchill Brothers).

Forwards: Sunil Chhetri (McDowell Mohun Bagan), Sushil Singh (Shillong Lajong FC), CS Sabeeth (Pailan Arrows), Joaquim Abranches (Dempo SC).
