New Delhi, Sep 25 (IANS) Army Boys, Bangalore defeated Mizoram’s Government Senior Higher Secondary School 2-1 to lift the Subroto Cup football title at the Ambedkar Stadium here Thursday.Strikes from Bobo Singh and Jakichan Singh helped the Army Boys claim the junior under-17 category title. Skipper Malswamtlunga scored the only goal for the Mizoram team.
The Army Boys took the lead in the 11th minute, when Bobo struck from a close range after being set-up by Jakichan in the box.
The lead was, however, short-lived as the Mizoram team drew parity in the very next minute when Malswamtluanga chipped into the net from Lalfakzuala’s pin-point pass.
Both teams were locked in an intense battle to break the deadlock but the first half — both halves are of 35 minutes each — ended 1-1.
Seventh minute into the second half, Jakichan gave Army Boys the lead with his swerving free-kick from just outside the box.
The Bangalore team took home the prize money of Rs.100,000 while Jakichan was adjudged the best player of the tournament and G. Venugopal the best coach. The Mizoram team was richer by Rs.60,000.
The Indian Air Force (IAF), which conducts the tournament, also gave away 30 scholarships worth Rs.20,000 in the junior section and 16 scholarships of Rs.10,000 in the sub-junior (under-14) category.
