Andy Roddick showed an impressive performance on Thursday and thrashed Frenchman Marc Gicquel in straight sets by 6-1,6-4,6-4. Roddick who was perhaps never the prime focus in the tennis championships owing to the adolescent inconsistencies he was known to display, has shown massive improvement and a renewed spirit of competition in the U.S. Open 2009 tournament. Albeit he has only one grand slam win to his credit whereas Federer has a mind-boggling 15, experts are not ruling him out completely from being the next U.S.Open champion.
Roddick who got his glory in the 2003 U.S.Open tournament proved in his recent victory over No.81 Gicquel that if initially his wins could be attributed to his physical power, only this time it became both patience and power. Roddick has been obstructed majorly by Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, and there is a good chance that he causes Federer some serious discomfort this time.
After Andre Agassi’s retirement from tennis the benchmark of excellence was expected to be underlined and conquered by Roddick who said about his Thursday victory, “I had good ball control l. I knew when it was right to go for one and when it was right to layoff.” But most onlookers would have noticed that Roddick was a fidgety bundle of anxiousness in the procedure of demolishing his opponent on Thursday.
The player told sources that he appreciated the concern and support that his fans were showing him and said he did not wish to let them down. It is an accepted fact that Grand Slam winners are constantly in the process of denying physical shortcomings, and at 27 Roddick is no exception to that rule.
