Nov. 22, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Andre Ward beat Mikkel Kessler, according to an unanimous technical decision taken by the judges. Andre is a former light-heavyweight Olympic champion and Mikkel is the undisputed WBA super-middleweight champion. Andre won in the Super Six Tournament. The tournament had to be stopped midway because of a cut Kesslar received in the face. This was the first fight for a world title for Andre Ward.
There is no doubt that Ward is a great boxer, and the comparisons that he sometimes has to face with Roy Jones Jr., is only another feather in his cap. He is one with rare talent and skill. His speed added with his dexterity makes him a lethal combination and accounts for the fact that he is already an Olympic gold medalist at a relatively young age. Therefore, the fight against Mikkel did show promise to be totally entertaining, but the outcome was certainly not expected. After all, Mikkel Kesslar is a veteran in the game, and the unanimous decision was that Ward had a tough draw in the match.
The victory was rather unexpected, even for the winner. He confessed that the fact will take some time to sink in as it feels all like a dream. He apologized for the head butt and said that it wasn’t intentional. Kesslar, on the other hand, was pretty upset about the cut. Over the disappointment of losing the round, he felt that he could have won if the match had not been stopped. However, he did admit that Ward was definitely the better fighter in that particular match.
