London, Apr. 12 (ANI): Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti may decide to drop 50 million pound striker Fernando Torres for Tuesday night’s Champions League quarter-final second-leg against Manchester United. According to The Telegraph, Ancelotti is understood to be giving serious consideration to leaving out Torres from the starting XI for a match which could decide the Italian’s future at the club.
However, Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson has raised the pressure on Ancelotti by declaring that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich had “nailed his colours to the mast” by signing Torres in the January transfer window.
“It seems it has become an obsession with them to win the European Cup. It is a fantastic competition. But to have an obsession on winning the European Cup is stretching yourself a wee bit,” Ferguson was quoted, as saying.
Ancelotti has dismissed Ferguson’s talk of “obsession”. “It’s not an obsession. It’s a dream,” he said, while reiterating his stance that “pressure” was something he thrived upon.
The Spanish striker is yet to score for Chelsea since his move from Liverpool.
When asked whether would play, Ancelotti said: “Yes, he will play,” but added that he did not know as yet whether he would be in the starting line-up. (ANI)
When asked whether this tie would decide his future, Ancelotti said: “No. My future is already decided. I don’t have a problem about this game.” That is because, he added, he has one more year left on his contract. (ANI)
