All-male St Andrews Golf Club on historic brink of admitting females
April 30th, 2011 - 2:03 pm ICT by ANILondon, Apr 30 (ANI): The all-male St. Andrews Golf club is on the brink of admitting women for the first time because of new equality laws.
In a letter to members, they are recommending a change in their rules, which at present do not specifically outlaw women.
The club has warned members that it could face prosecution under equality laws for failing to allow women to join.
According to the Daily Mail, in the letter to members, the club states that the club rules would need to be made clearer and more robust.
Members are being asked to give their opinions ahead of a special meeting on May 26 at the Victorian club house.
The club has never admitted a female member since its establishment in May 1754.
That caused a political storm in 2009 when First Minister Alex Salmond urged it to break 250 years of history and admit lady members.
However, Royal and Ancient club (R&A) spokesman said that the R&A does not discuss membership matters publicly but we are fully aware of the act and will act accordingly to that. (ANI)
