Alex Ferguson won’t blame goalkeeper for draw

London, Oct 17(ANI): Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has refused to put the blame on goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar after his howler gave West Brom a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.
“Manchester United threw away a 2-0 lead in six minutes of madness in the second half, with the Dutch goalkeeper gifting Somen Tchoyi an open goal for the equalizer,” The Sun reports.
“It is an inexplicable result and obviously frustrating. I suppose there are two ways of looking at it. If we were in the middle of the league we could say we were still undefeated. For us it is not good enough,” said Ferguson.
“Sometimes it is better to be one goal in front than two. You keep your focus a bit more. Edwin van der Sar has probably been playing for 25 years and he was probably in primary school the last time he made a mistake like that,” he added.
Ferguson having some superb performances by the goalkeeper over a number of seasons was not prepared to criticise him, and asserted that the game should be forgotten.
“You have to just wipe it off the slate. It is not a defining result in terms of where the league is going to end up but we cannot keep doing that,” he said.
Ferguson also admitted that midfielder Ryan Giggs is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering another setback on his comeback after a fortnight out. (ANI)
