Agra jubiliant over Chahar’s selection in Rajasthan Royals
January 13th, 2011 - 7:02 pm ICT by IANSAgra, Jan 13 (IANS) Young medium pacer Deepak Chahar’s selection by Rajasthan Royals for the Indian Premier League (IPL) fourth season has sparked celebration among Agra’s sports lovers.Chahar, who is born in Agra, has taken 33 wickets for Rajasthan in eight first class matches. In the under-19, he took 35 wickets in two sessions, says his father Lokendra Singh Chahar interacting with the media here.
“We knew a call was round the corner because he has impressed everyone with his commitment and performance on the field. Agra’s hope has been realised,” he said.
Chahar had an offer from Deccan Chargers also but he was more keen on being included in the Rajasthan Royals team and playing in the final eleven. “I am sure Deepak will get a chance to show his talent in the Shane Warne-led team which also has Rahul Dravid,” said his father.
His one-time coach K.K.Sharma said Chahar’s sterling performance in the Ranji Trophy matches and selection in the Duleep Trophy tournament has boosted his morale and proved he is a cricketer to be watched.
Chahar in his 2009 debut Ranji Trophy match against Hyderabad created a sensation by taking eight wickets for 10 runs. The whole team was bundled out for just 21 runs, the lowest ever score in a Ranji Trophy.
Chahar’s father took early retirement from the Indian Air Force to concentrate on grooming his son’s cricketing abilities. The family members are now excited at his selection for the Rajasthan Royals.
“He has already touched the 140 km speed mark and is likely to cross it very soon, because he is an amazing fitness freak. He swings the ball both ways and could be deadly on wickets with some fresh and green patches,” said cricket commentator Pramod Qadri.
Chahar was a member of the under-15 team to England in 2007 and Rajasthan Ranji Trophy team that toured Australia in 2009.
