Agassi recalls hitting a `big wall’ after being on a tennis roll for two years
November 9th, 2009 - 5:04 pm ICT by ANINew York, Nov.9 (ANI): Tennis star Andre Agassi was clearly on a roll till the 1995 U.S. Open final, and then found that himself hitting what he called a great wall.
He recalls his then girlfriend, Brooke Shields convincing him to shave his head, and him losing to Pete Sampras.
“I hit a big wall. I lost interest. Lost desire. Lost inspiration, is what I really lost that day,” he told CBS.
“You know, I was also in a life that I didn’t want to be in. I didn’t want to be playing tennis either, you know. So, my life was filled with things I didn’t want, things I didn’t choose, you know. Part of it was an inability to really find a place for anything, really,” he adds.
He claims when his assistant asked him if he wanted to get high and offered him a white powder - an illegal highly addictive drug called crystal meth, Agassi writes he was in “such a bad way” he agreed.
“My decision was ‘Why not? Can’t feel any worse.’ There was a sadness that came with it initially, followed by the energy and a chemically induced reconnection to life. I was looking for anything to make me get off the couch, to make me re-engage in life,” Agassi said.
“Did he think about the ramifications while doing it, and Agassi said: “Of course not. How do you think about that? I knew what I was doing but tennis wasn’t a concern to me, ’cause I didn’t care about tennis. You know, my own body wasn’t really that much of a concern to me because I didn’t think that highly of myself.”
Asked if that was the first time in his life where he felt that it was his choice, Agassi said, “It was the first time in my life. Twenty-seven years old. Ranked 141 in the world. And in a marriage that I shouldn’t be in.” (ANI)
