Afridi rubbishes ’speculations’ surrounding one-day, T20 captaincy
August 6th, 2010 - 4:05 pm ICT by ANIKarachi, Aug.6 (ANI): Pakistan one-day and T20 captain Shahid Afridi has rubbished speculations surrounding his captaincy, and said he would soon be joining the team in England for the upcoming five-match one-day series against the hosts.
Afridi had stepped down as Test captain after Pakistan lost the first Test at Lord’s against Australia last month leaving the team in the lurch following which it was being anticipated that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may remove him from one-day captaincy.
However, the flamboyant all rounder has described all such reports as mere ’speculations.’
“It’s all speculations. I am not bothered about the captaincy. If they select me as a player I am ready to serve Pakistan,” The Dawn quoted Afridi, as saying.
Commenting on his sudden resignation from captaincy, Afridi said he had decided to come out of Test retirement only because of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ijaz Butt.
“Butt sahab believed that I can gel the team and lead them from the front,” Afridi said, while admitting that he had taken a wrong decision.
“To be frank, after my dismissal in the second innings of the Lord’s Test against Australia, I felt I took the wrong decision. Test cricket does not match my temperament. Therefore, I suddenly decided to quit the longer version of the game,” he said. (ANI)
