Karachi, April 15(ANI): Pakistan’s limited-overs captain Shahid Afridi has said that he did not leave for the Caribbean tour along with the rest of the Pakistani squad because of “some personal work”.

When Afridi did not leave for West Indies along with the squad from the Allama Iqbal airport in Lahore, it raised a lot of eyebrows over the real reason behind his late departure.

While some said that Afridi had forgotten his passport in Karachi, others said that he had requested to leave later since he wanted to return from Lahore to Karachi to meet his father, who is not keeping well.

Afridi, however, insisted that there was nothing fishy behind his delayed departure.

“I had some personal work to take care of, and that is why I am leaving now,” The Nation quoted Afridi, as telling media persons before departing for Dubai at the Karachi airport.

The flamboyant all-rounder, who had failed with the bat during the recently concluded World Cup, said that he wanted to make an impact with his batting during the Windies tour.

“I realise that our batting is an area of concern, and it is also my responsibility as captain to contribute with the bat. In the coming series my main emphasis will be on my batting and I want to score some runs,” he said.

Pakistan will play a Twenty20 and a five-match one-day series with Shahid Afridi as captain, while two test matches will be played under the captaincy of Misbah-Ul-Haq.

Pakistan’s limited-overs squad includes five players yet to play for the senior team- wicketkeeper Mohammad Salman, batsman Usman Salahuddin, allrounder Hammad Azam and pacers Sadaf and Junaid Khan.

“This series is the start of our preparations for next year’s Twenty20 World Cup, and I think this tour is a good platform for the new players to show that they can succeed at the international level,” said Afridi.

He noted that other youngsters like batsmen Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal and bowler Wahab Riaz must also continue their progress at the top level.
“I think as a team we all have to realise our responsibilities to deliver for the country, and this series will give us a good opportunity to start afresh and prepare for the upcoming events,” Afridi said. (ANI)
