Kolkata, March 6 (IANS) City soccer giants East Bengal failed to translate their domination into goals to go down 0-1 to Yemen’s Al Orouba in their maiden Group B AFC Cup opener here Tuesday.

The visitors, facing a barrage of East Bengal attacks for most part of the game, struck through their Niegerian recruit Fatai Alao seconds before the half time whistle, much to the disappointment of spectators at the Salt Lake Stadium.

Alao’s winner came from a penalty awarded by Bangladesh referee Shamsuzzman Hasan Tayeb after East Bengal custodian Gurwinder Singh and defender Gurpreet had a misunderstanding and the latter was pulled up for a foul on striker Abdellah Sharyan.

East Bengal showed cohesion in the midfield, had good build ups and carried out incisive attacks into their opponent’s territory but lacked the final punch.

However, the home side was distinctly unlucky in the early minutes of the second session when Edmilson’s free kick came off the upright before Orouba goalkeeper Muaadh Mohammad managed to collect the ball.
