Rio de Janeiro, Feb 26 (IANS) Adriano scored his long-awaited first goal of the season, giving his team a 1-0 win over Botafogo-SP to extend its lead in the Sao Paulo state championship.

He came under heavy criticism from fans early in the season for being overweight. Some fans even called for his expulsion from the club, Xinhua reported.

However, a little more than a month later the striker has turned his game around.

Adriano scored the tenth round game’s only goal in the third minute of play Saturday. Alex weaved through the Botafogo-SP defence and passed it to a sliding Adriano who knocked the ball underneath goalkeeper Juninho.

Playing comfortably and confidently, head coach Tite decided to keep Adriano on the field for the entire game.

The striker almost scored a second goal in the 39th minute, but his header sailed wide of the goal.

Despite his excellent play, Adriano promised that there is still plenty of room for improvement, stating that he will remain working hard in order to lose the estimated four extra kilos that he still carries.

The result increases Corinthians’ lead in the tournament. In the next round of play the team hosts Catanduvense Wednesday.
