Adam LaRoche Traded To Sox

laroche_136821gm-a Red Sox acquired Pittsburgh baseman Adam LaRoche to give them the depth they have lacked in the corner infield slots, freeing Kevin Youkilis to shift over to the third base and give Mike Lowell and his surgically repaired hip a little more rest in the second half.

The acquisition of LaRoche from Pittsburgh in exchange for the shortstop Argenis Diaz and pitcher Hunter Strickland can impact the Red Sox in two ways. This option will provide the Sox to rest Mike Rowell more regularly. Though Lowell has been a quality player with the bat, but the injury that he suffered seems to have taken a toll in his form. Secondly, the swap protects the Red Sox from any further breakdowns. It has been reported that after July 31 the chances of meaningful move dwindles since players must clear waivers before being dealt.

The Pirates had been looking to get out from under the balance of LaRoche’s $7.05 million salary for the season and were not expected to make run at re-signing team. They received two minor leaguers who are actually not expected to deliver a prolific performance.

However, the deal means that the red-hot hitting Lastings Milledge finally should earn a promotion that would bring him back to the big leagues, where he is supposed to battle Brandon Moss and Delwyn Young for playing time in left field. Garrett Jones will automatically slide over to the first base.

If another move is set up, then the Sox will not only benefit in this year, but for several more seasons to come. A source said that the Sox had been trying to deal with San Diego baseman Adrian Gonzalez, but backed out later.
